SEO Tips on Alt attribute in Image Tags

Optimizing images with alt attribute plays a vital role in SEO for websites. Google’s webmaster guidelines also advises the use of alternative text for the images on your web site.

ALT Attribute:

Use the alt attribute to provide descriptive text for the Image. For example: If there is an image which describes SEO Services Package your alt attribute values should be “SEO Services”. Don’t stuff your keywords in the alt attributes, most of the search engines consider it as a Spam, and it may also result in a penalizing of your website.

Guidelines on Alt Attribute:

  • Always add alt attributes to images, Alt is mandatory for accessibility and also if your page is to be valid XHTML.
  • For images that play only a decorative role in the page, use an empty alt (i.e. alt=”").
  • Choose a logical file name that reinforces the keywords for your image URL.
  • Label the file extension. For example, if the image search engine sees a”.jpg” (JPEG) file extension it will crawl it and it can be searched by Google Images.
  • Make sure that the text nearby the image is relevant to that image, because it helps the visitor to understand what the image is
